The government blames terrorists and "armed gangs" for the unrest and says more than 2,000 members of its security forces have been killed. "We strongly condemn the behavior of the Syrian security forces and their crackdowns on the Syrian population and we urge the Syrian leadership to accommodate the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people," he told a news conference during an alliance summit in Chicago. The Local Coordination Committees and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the clashes took place in Kfar Souseh early Sunday morning but there were no immediate reports of casualties. The district is a high security area, housing the Foreign Ministry and several security and intelligence agencies. It has also been the scene of frequent anti-Assad demonstrations since the uprising began. "Violent clashes broke out between rebel fighters and regime troops at a checkpoint in Kfar Souseh district,'' the Observatory said in a statement. Both the Observatory and LCC said explosions and gunfire were also heard in several other neighborhoods of Damascus as government forces continued shelling the opposition stronghold and Damascus suburb of Douma. It appears that the reports are false. Activist Alexander Page wrote this regarding the claims: "Riad Al Asaad the FSA commander based in Turkey has given me a direct quote, that the only genuine news here is the clashes that took place in the Kafarsooseh area and that 2 explosions were heard during the process where FSA elements clashed with regime forces in the fields between that area near Mezzeh." ....................................................... 7.24am The Local Coordination Committees are reporting powerful explosions in Shaalan, a neighbourhood in the heart of Damascus, and intense gunfire in the upscale neighbourhoods of Abu Roumaneh and Malki. The activist network also reports clashes between the Free Syrian Army and government troops in the dirstrict of Kafr Souseh. Al Jazeera cannot confirm the reports. ............................................................... 7.22am The Syrian government has reportedly sentenced a citizen journalist to death after he gave a series of interviews to Al-Jazeera. Mohammed Abdelmawla al-Hariri was found guilty of "high treason and contacts with foreign parties". He was arrested in April soon after speaking to Al Jazeera about the situation in Deraa.
